The Marine Air Wing is a large aviation command that serves as the air component of the MAGTF. The Air Wing exists primarily to support the Marines on the ground through air interdiction and close air support, but it can also conduct air superiority and reconnaissance missions. The wing is organized into four groups, each with a different specialty.
Marine Aircraft Group 1 is the “Light” helicopter group. It consists of light attack and medium transport helicopters that are capable of lifting Marines from ship to shore while providing close air support from Cobra gunships.
Marine Aircraft Group 2 is the “Heavy” group. It consists of heavy lift and tiltrotor aircraft that can deliver large loads to the combat zone – either large formations of Marine infantry or heavy equipment like artillery, supplies, and wheeled vehicles.
Marine Aircraft Group 3 is the “Fixed Wing” group. It consists of fixed wing strike fighters and ground attack aircraft that can support Marines on the ground or they can clear the skies of enemy aircraft. They can also operate from Navy aircraft carriers if necessary.
Marine Air Wing HQ Group is the support element, providing command and control, communications, and air defense for the wing. Also grouped in the headquarters group are two helicopter squadrons that are assigned to the SHAMs.
