The 5th Air Force is the reserve component of the ROD Air Force. The pilots, aircrews, groundcrews, and support personnel are all required to maintain their certifications, but they generally only drill once per month, in addition to a 2-week annual training event. They can be called to active duty in time of war or national emergency.
5th Air Force aircraft tend to be a little older than active Air Force aircraft. And 5th Air Force units sometimes fly planes that are considered obsolete. Would they stand up against a 5th generation fighter? Certainly not. But having some cool-looking older aircraft in the mix can be a lot of fun!
